Married Again 2

Phyllis shifted on the comfy couch, the soft cushions sighing beneath her as she crossed her legs—an old habit that still felt faintly strange in a body that wasn’t the one she’d known for nearly six decades. The light blue floral frock she wore draped delicately over her frame, frills brushing her knees, pastel blossoms catching the afternoon light from the window. A thin necklace rested at her collarbone, and a gold wedding band gleamed on her finger.

Beside her sat Alana, her wife of more than ten years, looking effortlessly elegant in a white button-down dress patterned with tiny pink prints. The V-neckline suited her, and the earrings she wore swayed slightly as she turned her head. If anyone had walked into the living room, they would have seen two young men in their twenties—both wearing dresses, light makeup, and quiet confidence—curled together like an old married couple on a lazy afternoon.

Alana sighed, leaning back against the couch. “Phyllis,” she said, her voice warm but puzzled, “I still don’t get it. Why do we have to get married again? We’ve already been married for over ten years.”

Phyllis smiled, reaching for Alana’s hand. The hand felt different—larger, unfamiliar—but the comfort was exactly the same. “I know it sounds ridiculous,” she said gently. “But legally, we don’t exist as us anymore. On paper, we’re two men in their twenties who’ve never been married. Our vows belong to bodies we don’t have.”

Alana frowned, thinking it over, her thumb tracing the edge of her wedding band. “So even though we’re still us… the world doesn’t see it that way.”

“Exactly,” Phyllis replied. “Getting married again isn’t about changing anything between us. It’s just making our marriage official in these bodies. Same love. Same commitment. Just… new paperwork.”

There was a long pause. Alana glanced down at their joined hands, then back up at Phyllis. Slowly, a smile spread across her face. “Alright,” she said. “I’ll do it. But this time, I’m wearing a different dress than last time.”

Phyllis laughed, her eyes bright. “Me too!”
